#9 Poetry – Alone… Somewhat (2012)

Here I found myself again, following my feet
Which bring me to the seashore
Here… The sky and the ground, waves and the shore meet
I look at the cloudy heaven, about to pour

It is strange, sitting on this salty land
With nobody beside you besides emptiness
You stretch your hand in the silken sand
All you find around is complete loneliness

Yes, there are people around, like always there are
Sharing the same room, bench, bed
But no matter how close they seem they are far
In the end it is only you who face what lies ahead

With open ears, there are all sorts of noises around
With an open heart, you have just your music, your own sound.

#6 Poetry – When words fail (2010)

So new is this feeling

Writing the message nth time

And on the next second… Deleting

So much I have got to say

But the only god damn question is

Will I possibly find a way?

No idea where am I heading

But I carry a single ticket

That ugly truth left me shredding

Last statement didn’t make me glad

As I just realized

Expressing feelings was an idea so bad

It’s becoming even more uncertain

Wonder why

Doesn’t “Something” have a hold button?

Bloody whole rhyme is so lame

Didn’t find a way out

Just hardened the game

Difficulties and hitches are true

But when you’ll need me

My presence will be felt by you

The end is always marked by a sigh

I can’t wave you back

It’s too hard to say goodbye……..

#5 Poetry – 24 Hours Passed Now (2010)

Any festival like this and your phone starts buzzing

As it would be right now

But will you be awaiting my message somehow?

Never planned to irritate you… Make you so blue

But today I missed someone… I hope you did too

24 hours passed now and not a word from your end

Shut up and keep quiet is the lesson to comprehend

Days which passed were truly amazing

But that time is now, only left for memorizing

Aren’t I a total idiot, sitting on earth and

Howling at the moon?

Closing my eyes now, hoping for sleep to come soon…

#4 Poetry – Identity of I (2011)

Identity is not what I promise others

Identity is what I do when I am alone

Identity is what I think of others

Knowing all the hatred they’ve shown

Identity is what every wound reminds me

Identity is what I learn and what I pass by

Identity is what I see in the mirror

After giving my best try

Identity is what I make out of my given chance

Identity is what I accept and what I deny

No one else has control over me

Life is about me, and what I identify

#3 POETRY – A Sunday, when you need it (2011)

All you want is a week off

All you get is a Sunday,

When you need it!

All you want is your whole class to befriend you

All you get is one person, who always listens to you,

When you need it!

All you want is to be the most interesting person alive

All you get is one lovable idiot, who makes you feel like one,

When you need it!

All you want is to top your class with flying colours

All you get is that short and sweet one minute lead,

When you need it!

All you want is everything good in this world all at once

All you get is something better part by part,

All you have to do is to close your eyes,

All you have to do is cherish what you get,

All you have to make is the best out of it,

Because it is a Sunday, which comes once a week,

Only,

When you need it!

#1 Billy Wilder – Fedora (1978)

Glorify who you are today, do not condemn who you were yesterday.

I saw my very first Billy Wilder film today and I can’t wait to watch more of his work. In his career spanning five decades as a film maker, he has accomplished to make sixty film, many of them still considered as classics. I feel dreadful to say that I haven’t been fortunate enough to watch more of his films. I look forward to it.

(Spoilers ahead)

First things first, I feel the poster gives away the story completely. If you can join the dots, it should not be difficult for you to determine the great secret behind Fedora. As for myself, I knew it all along. I’ve known this story for a long time and it makes me wonder what kept me from watching it so long. And yet, I was hooked. I think there are very few films who possess you so deeply that even if you know what is there to unfold you just wait to appreciate how it unfolds.

And this is what the film is all about, unfolding a story. Fedora, to those who don’t know it yet is this. Essentially a hat which leaves a shadow on your face when you walk in the Sun; covering most of it. The brilliance of the story begins with the title. The title tells us the story in a word. And that’s it.

We have so many films which end with every character in the film getting what he/she wanted. A crescendo, a happy ending. Surprisingly enough, though this is not the only film that has done this but it must be among the very first to end a film with none of the characters getting what they wished for. I feel it is just another suggestion towards the real world of celebrities which is different from their profile they project in public. It is about the tragedy of those who seem to have it all, but in reality are more hurt, more lonely than anyone else.

If we speak about the pattern, we have seen this same one in Citizen Kane. Charles Foster Kane dies right in the start and we explore his story through some unreliable sources with prejudices and biases. Although this structure is much simpler. It consists of two distinct flash backs according to me. One right after our point of view character,  Barry “Dutch” Detweiler played by William Holden stares at the mortal remains of the Legend, Fedora. And the other after the secret is just revealed in the second half.

We know all along that the film is not going to end on a high. We have no moments in the film when we can rejoice for long. Just the haunting past which keeps pricking us right where it hurts and reminds us of the unfortunate future of everyone. And that’s what makes the film so special for me.

#9 Write ups – Jobless and (shamelessly) proud (2012)

Being jobless is the time when you have nothing to do. Absolutely true! But have you ever wondered, how difficult it is not to do anything at all? I mean just not doing anything?

When you are resting, you are resting. When you are watching the re runs of The Simpsons, you are watching them. When you are sticking a finger up your nose finding that hidden treasure, you are doing something. Doing something! There is always a verb in a sentence. Without a verb a sentence is incomplete. And if you agree to that you may even consider that it is impossible to do nothing at all.

Being jobless is the time when you have nothing to do.

Ummm maybe you have to check your facts before calling it true.

What if we somewhat rephrase it just here and there? What if we say, being jobless is the time when you don’t HAVE to do anything. It makes complete sense to me. Because in this short span called life, we never have to do anything! People may put some heavy sacks on our shoulders and command us to carry them. But we can put them down anytime. It is ultimately our choice.

Choice. A choice is what we always have. Decision. A decision is what we always have to make. No matter how much our teacher makes us do our homework we can choose not to. No matter how much our parents force us to take up a job, no matter how much our boss makes us do shitty work… We have a choice. We can always say ‘no’ on anyone’s face and write our own story. Of course it is practical. And of course it has its consequences.

So here I am, watching my favourite movie, sipping hot Bournvita in this weather REGARDLESS of the insignificant advices that float around me. Because if you have faith in the choices you make, if you have the courage to support your intuition then you can stand tall and say, “Fuck you. 2+2 is always 4 in math not in life.”

Jobless and proud: Yes that’s what I am. And that’s what I am always going to be. Because whatever I will do, it won’t be a job given by a random Armani wearing guy. It will be something I have accepted to do. It won’t be an accident. It will be my self-written-destiny… And when you do something you really want to do, when you pour your heart into it, you become good at it and most importantly, find happiness!

Note: For all those who think this just looks good on paper not in reality, the last line in the second last para is for you. (Shamelessly)
